The disability pension may be received by persons who meet all of the following criteria:
- have not reached the statutory retirement age;
- have not been granted the old-age pension, including the early old-age pension;
- have a confirmed disability (except where the cause of disability is a work-related accident or an occupational disease occurring after the 1 January 1997);
- have an insurance period of at least three years.
The disability pension is paid until the age at which the person becomes eligible for the old-age pension.Once the recipient reaches the statutory retirement age set in Latvia, the old-age pension is granted.. During the period of disability, the old-age pension amount cannot be lower than the disability pension previously received. Thus, if the disability pension is higher than the calculated old-age pension, the person receives the old-age pension in the same amount as the disability pension. If disability is no longer confirmed at the time the old-age pension is granted, the person receives the calculated old-age pension amount.
The rule of maintaining the amount of the disability pension at the time of granting the old-age pension does not apply if:
- entitlement to the old-age pension was obtained exclusively
onunder international social security agreements or the Regulation of the European Parliament and Council (EC) No. 883/2004 (dated: 29 April 2004), or - the insurance period used to calculate the old-age pension is shorter than the insurance period used to calculate the disability pension.
During employment, the full disability pension amount continues to be paid.
The disability pension amount is determined individually and depends on the confirmed disability category.
As of 1 January 2026, for persons with Group III disabilities, the disability pension is granted at the level of the disability pension calculation basis: 213.00 EUR, or 255.00 EUR for persons with disabilities since childhood.
The disability pension amount for Groups I and II is based on:
- the person's average monthly wage from which social insurance contributions are paid, calculated from any 36 consecutive months within the last 5 years before the disability pension was granted;
- the person's individual social insurance period;
- the maximum possible insurance period, counted from the age of 15 up to the statutory retirement age defined by law.
If disability insurance contributions were not made for a period of 5 years prior to the disability pension being granted, the minimum disability pension is awarded.
To calculate the minimum disability pensions for persons with Group I and II disabilities, a coefficient is applied to the disability pension calculation basis: 1.6 - for persons with Group I disabilities (340.80 EUR, or 408.00 EUR for persons with disabilities since childhood); 1.4 - for persons with Group II disabilities (298.20 EUR, or 357.00 EUR for persons with disabilities since childhood).
