So that fathers could be involved in taking care of their newborn children they can use 10 days Paternity leave until the 2 months of infant's age. Socially insured fathers who use this leave receive paternity benefit.
Paternity benefit is granted and paid for 10 calendar days of the granted leave:
- the father of the child in connection with the birth of the child;
- to one of the parents due to the adoption of a child under the age of 18, who is in foster care.
The benefit shall be granted in the amount of 80% of the average insurance contributions salary of the applicant.
From 1 September 2020 persons, for which compulsory contributions for paternity insurance have been made or had to be made in the Republic of Latvia:
- for at least 3 months in the period of the last 6 months before the month when the insurance event has occurred (the first day of leave), or
- for at least 6 months in the last 24 months
are also entitled to benefit.
